The Wegovy® Pill: How Oral Semaglutide Works and Who It's For

by Thrive Wellness on

For many people considering GLP-1 medications, the biggest hesitation isn't the medication itself—it's the needle.

The Wegovy® pill is changing that: GLP-1 therapy, no weekly injection required. Here's how it works and how the two stack up.

What is the Wegovy® Pill?

The Wegovy® pill is an oral form of semaglutide, the same active ingredient found in injectable GLP-1 medications. In December 2025, it became the first oral GLP-1 medication approved by the FDA for weight management.

Semaglutide works on several systems at once: reducing appetite, slowing how quickly your stomach empties, improving insulin response, and helping regulate blood sugar. Together, those effects make it easier to manage hunger, reduce cravings, and support steady weight loss over time.

The main difference from the injectable version? You take it as a daily tablet, instead of a weekly shot.

How the Wegovy® Pill Works

Unlike most medications, oral semaglutide needs a little help getting absorbed. It's designed to survive digestion and reach your bloodstream intact, but only under the right conditions.

The routine is simple:

  • First thing in the morning
  • With a small amount of water (not a full glass)
  • On a completely empty stomach
  • Then wait about 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything else

Consistency is key. The more reliably you follow these steps, the better the medication can do its job.

Wegovy® Pill vs. Injectable GLP-1: How They Compare

Both forms contain semaglutide, so the underlying mechanism is the same. The difference comes down to how they fit into your daily life.

For some people, a daily pill feels more manageable than injections. For others, the simplicity of a once-a-week shot is actually the easier option. Neither is universally better; it really comes down to what works best for you.

Who Might Be a Better Fit for the Pill?

The oral option tends to appeal to people who have a strong aversion to needles, prefer the familiarity of taking a daily pill, or simply want to explore all available GLP-1 options before deciding. For some patients, removing the injection barrier is what it takes to start treatment.

Who Might Do Better With Injections?

Injections still make more sense for a lot of people. A weekly shot can be easier to stay on top of than a daily pill with specific morning requirements. Injectable semaglutide also doesn't come with the same absorption requirements: no empty stomach, no waiting period, no timing the rest of your morning around it.

It's worth thinking honestly about your schedule, travel habits, and daily routine before deciding. The best option isn't the one that looks better on paper. It's the one that fits your life.

Does the Wegovy® Pill Actually Work?

The short answer is yes, and the data backs it up. In the phase 3 OASIS 1 trial published in The Lancet, participants taking higher-dose oral semaglutide lost an average of 15% of their body weight at 68 weeks—rising to 17% among those who fully adhered to the protocol over that same period. Those results are comparable to what's been seen with injectable semaglutide.

That said, both figures came from trials that combined the medication with lifestyle changes, and results aren't the same for everyone. How well it works depends on things like where your metabolic health is starting from, your nutrition and activity habits, and how consistently you take the medication.

The Bottom Line

GLP-1 medications keep evolving, and the Wegovy® pill is a meaningful addition for people weighing their options. Whether you go with a daily tablet or a weekly injection, both medications target the same things: appetite, blood sugar, and metabolic health. The only difference is how they're administered.

If you're not sure which option makes sense for you, that's exactly what a medical provider is there to help figure out. Thrive's care team can walk you through the differences between GLP-1 medications and help you build a treatment plan that fits your metabolic health goals.
