More Than TRT: Steve’s Thrive Story
- Came to Thrive for: Testosterone replacement therapy
- Before Thrive: TRT injections and concerns about his broader health
- With Thrive: Comprehensive testing, physician-guided care and a more complete view of his health through Healthspan
- Biggest Change: Feeling like his health is being actively managed with his long-term health in mind
He Came to Thrive for TRT. He Found Something Bigger.
When Steve first came to Thrive, he had a pretty specific goal.
He was already on testosterone replacement therapy and wanted to explore switching from injections to an oral option.
"I came to Thrive really just looking for TRT," Steve said.
But once he started working with his Thrive physician and completed more comprehensive testing, the conversation quickly became about much more than testosterone.
“I came in for TRT, but I found out Thrive was a lot more than that. The comprehensive care was actually the biggest win for me.”
As Steve and his physician began looking more closely at his overall health, he transitioned from focusing primarily on TRT to Thrive Healthspan, a more comprehensive approach built around extensive lab testing, a physician review, and a personalized plan based on his results.
Steve had concerns that extended well beyond his testosterone levels. He had been adopted and knew there was a significant history of heart problems among the men in his biological family. Yet he felt those risks hadn't been adequately addressed by his previous provider.
That changed when he started working with Dr. Catherine Isaac at Thrive. Steve remembers her taking a different approach from the start.
“She said, ‘Let’s slow down, look at your blood work, and put the full picture of your health together.’”
Looking Beyond a Single Number
Steve had been on TRT for more than three years before coming to Thrive. But instead of looking only at his testosterone levels, his Thrive physician began looking at how the pieces of his health fit together.
That included his blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiovascular risk factors, nutrition and testosterone levels.
For Steve, the shift in focus was significant.
"I came in thinking about the benefits of TRT—more energy, feeling better, better workouts," he said. "But that became secondary to understanding my overall health."
Based on his initial results and health history, Steve’s physician recommended additional testing and began addressing his health concerns one at a time.
He especially appreciated that nothing felt rushed.
"She went slowly and methodically. We’d make one change, see what it did, and adjust as needed."
Rather than changing everything at once, Steve describes the process as “a very structured and pragmatic approach.”
Treating the Person, Not Just the Goal
That approach is one of the biggest differences Steve sees between Thrive and his previous experiences with care.
In the past, he felt the focus was often on helping him reach the outcome he wanted in the moment. With Thrive, he says the conversation is also about what those decisions could mean for his health years from now.
"Dr. Catherine manages my health for what’s best for me, not just for what I think my results should be," Steve said.
For him, that means balancing how he wants to feel and perform today with his long-term health.
“I want you to live. I want you to live well. I want you to do the things you want to do now, but I also want you to live longer,” Steve said, describing his physician’s approach. "We’re not treating one thing in a silo. We’re looking at my long-term health."
That broader perspective also led Steve to make changes outside of his medical care, including working on his nutrition.
Some of what he had been doing previously was giving him the physical results he wanted to see in the mirror, he said, but wasn't necessarily supporting how he wanted to feel.
Now, he sees those pieces as part of the same picture.
"I Just Feel Better as a Human."
Steve has noticed physical changes since starting with Thrive. His clothes fit better. He likes what he sees in the mirror. He feels better during his workouts and daily life.
But when asked what someone close to him would notice, those weren't the first things he mentioned.
He talked about feeling calmer.
“I’m a lot more relaxed and calm,” he said.
For someone who has spent years thinking about his family history and what it could mean for his future, having a physician actively paying attention to his health has given him something he didn't expect: a greater sense of control.
"There’s a calmness that comes from knowing somebody’s paying attention and helping me manage my health," Steve said.
And ultimately, that's how Steve measures the impact Thrive has had.
“I just feel better as a human,” he said. “It’s just been amazing.”
Thinking Beyond Today
At 57, Steve thinks about his health differently than he once did.
His family history made longevity personal long before he came to Thrive. But now, instead of simply worrying about what could happen, he feels like he has someone helping him understand his health and make decisions with the future in mind.
"I don’t feel like I have to worry about my health the way I used to," he said. "I have someone looking out for my best interests."
And when Steve thinks about what that could mean years from now, it comes down to something much simpler than a lab value.
"Because of Thrive, I feel like I’ll get to play with my grandkids for a long time."
For Steve, that’s what taking care of his health is really about.
Thrive looks beyond a single symptom, number or goal to help you better understand your health and what to do next.
